Spotlight: Managing Coopetition in Supplier Networks

In this weeks Spotlight we talk with Associate Professor Miriam Wilhelm about the paper she authored with Professer Jörg Sydow entitled " Managing Coopetition in Supplier Networks".

Recent debates on the dark side of supplier relations have sensitised buying firms to the risks of over-embeddedness with suppliers. Buying firms try to mitigate this risk by maintaining relations with a larger set of suppliers, instead of building close relations with few suppliers. Most of them end up choosing “a larger share of a smaller pie” and miss opportunities to derive benefits from simultaneous cooperation and competition. In their research paper, Miriam Wilhelm and Jörg Sydow take a closer look at this “paradox of coopetition” in the context of the automotive supplier networks.
